BHM with Lowe Saddler

February is more than just hearts and chocolate—it's also a time to celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans. And here at Suave, we're all about honoring the brilliance that Black creators bring to our world!

We dedicated this month to speak to our creator Lowe Saddler and asked some questions to know more about her influences in her work!

Can you share with us some of the influences or inspirations behind your creative work?

I have to say, my family is probably one of my biggest inspirations for all of the creative work I do. My mom, for example, is one of the most soulful people I know. I watched her incorporate color and culture everywhere when I was growing up. And she taught me that no matter where I live, even if it’s a microscopic apartment, I should fill that space with things I love. She also always stresses that my home, my career path and so many more things don’t have to make sense to anyone but me. That’s my mantra nowadays, when I’m picking out art, deciding how to style my hair—really all the time.

Are there any specific Black artists, writers, musicians, or creatives who have inspired you in your own work?

Lately, I’ve been so inspired by Noah Davis. He was the most epic painter and really helped transform the art and culture space in Los Angeles not just for Black and Latinx folks, but for everyone in the city I think. I’ve never been great at painting or drawing, but I live for a good art piece, so it’s my dream to one day bring home one of Davis’s creations. He manages to capture the reality of life. His blackness is a part of his art, of course, but that’s not the only thing he captures. And I love the range. He captures whimsy and exuberance and history and light. That’s how I want my home to feel—how I want my life to feel. Sure I’m a Black person and love the culture and history I’ve inherited because of that, but I’m also just a person chasing the pretty things in life, the whimsy. When I find an artist who also seems to have the same feelings, I can’t stop thinking about them.
